Project description

We provide the pulp and paper industry with a new, alternative type of raw material for the production of pulp and paper products: fallen leaves! Simply put, these are small fibres that we extract from fallen leaves by a process developed and patented by us, which are used in the production cycle of paper production, instead of traditional wood.


Project mission

We are spreading the idea of making paper from fallen leaves around the world to create interoperable techno and ecosystems. Today, using the technology of pulp production from fallen leaves, we can prove that paper can be made without cutting down trees.

The company's strategy is to increase its research and production capacity by:
     - Search for new alternative resources for paper production;
     - Globalization of the project, through the introduction of technology everywhere;
     - Achieving the sustainability of production.

Ideology of RE-leaf PAPER development


Search for new raw materials of flora, which are based on the use of waste of its vital activity without violating its integrity, ie - "waste from waste".


Globalization of the project, by placing the production of pulp alternative to wood, in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, at least one production per continent.


The use of renewable, available raw materials - fallen leaves and the extension of the production chain from pulp production to the manufacture of paper products.

Features and benefits of RE-leaf PAPER

To produce 1 ton of traditional paper, we need to cut down 17 medium-sized trees, for the same amount of paper we can use 2.3 tons of fallen leaves instead of wood.

We use 15 (!) Times fewer water resources for the production of pulp and paper than traditional producers.
Also only 500 kWh of energy per ton of mass of leaves instead of about 5000 kWh per ton of wood mass.

By producing 1 ton of paper using our technology, we store 400 tons of oxygen per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 600 tons.
It is estimated that the production of paper from fallen leaves emits 72% less CO2 than traditional wood producers.


How is RE-leaf PAPER made?

RE-leaf PAPER is made of fallen leaves coming to the enterprise from cities. This makes it possible to solve the problem of the utilization of plant waste in the urban ecosystem and preserve the integrity of forest ecosystems.

1) Collecting fallen leaves.
Fallen leaves get to the processing plant from city parks, squares, territories where it is necessary to carry out sanitary works, that is why we do NOT collect leaves from forests! Different cities generate different amounts of leaves, this debit is the main index that allows you to calculate the processing capacity of the enterprise.


2) Getting fibrous mass.

The leaves, cleaned of debris, are loaded into a special chemical reactor, in which, under the influence of physical and chemical processes, fibres are extracted from the raw materials, from which paper will be made.

3) Fibre washing and grinding.
The pulp is washed several times to remove foreign structures that are not used for paper production. Because we do not use sulfur-containing chemical components, the washing process is very simple and low cost.

4) The pulp is converted into rolls of paper.
The fibrous pulp is mixed with biological fillers, and then a huge machine that collects the pulp into a solid canvas and then dries it into rolls of paper.

In terms of sustainability, the production of paper from fallen leaves is unsurpassed compared to paper made of wood: we achieve up to 72% reduction in CO2!

How do we do that?

1) low energy consumption (500 kWh);
2) low water consumption
(10-15 m3);
3) small logistical efforts
(radius 120 km);
4) complete absence of sulfur and chlorine in production processes;
2.3 tons of fallen leaves become one ton of pulp.

For comparison, if you produce a ton of wood, it looks something like this:

(600 m3).

(on average 4000 km);
4) mass use of chemicals
(eg, sodium sulfate, sodium sulfide, etc.);

Social impact and our tools

The purpose of the project is to enable people involved in forest conservation to receive income from this activity in financial and/or material form.

  • raising funds to start the production of pulp and paper from fallen leaves;

  • directing part of the profits from the activities of the enterprise to ensure a continuous process of restoration of trees and forests;

  • directing part of the profits received by investors from the activities of the enterprise to the restoration of trees and forests;

  • construction and implementation of a business model that will ensure the achievement of all goals and sustainability of the project.


Leading the Change

RE-leaf PAPER was founded in 2020 by Valentyn Frechka (left) and Andriy Vartsaba (right) in Ukraine to solve one of the biggest global environmental problems - deforestation to provide raw materials for the pulp and paper industry.
We are focused on sustainability in pulp and paper production and the search for new alternatives.
